Good Words for or from Humanity "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." -- Henry Brooks Adams "The cardinal virtue was no longer to love one's country. It was to feel compassion for one's fellow men and women." -- Noel Annan A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. - anon "Each of us has a spark of life inside us, and our highest endeavor ought to be to set off that spark in one another." -- Kenny Ausubel "Never express yourself more clearly than you think." -- Niels Bohr The Candle: I asked God for water, he gave me an ocean. I asked God for a flower, he gave me a garden. I asked God for a tree, he gave me a forest. I asked God for a friend, he gave me YOU. "There is not enough darkness in the world to put out the light of one candle." ''If there were human words to be said to human hearts [to solve problems and heal pain], I'm sure SOMEone would have figured out how to say them by now.'' ''Maybe they do, they just don't realize it. And that is how people fall in love.'' -- Ann Chenoweth and Alex Byers, 11/27/T/01 Lazy people don't get what they want, nor even what they ask for, but only what they deserve. -- Ann Chenoweth, 1/21/M/2002 "Jump into the middle of things, get your hands dirty, fall flat on your face, and then reach for the stars." -- Joan L. Curcio "Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson "I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him." -- Galileo Galilei "When we treat man as he is, we make him worse than he is; when we treat him as if he already were what he potentially could be, we make him what he should be." -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe "Wild, dark times are rumbling towards us, and the prophet who wishes to write a new apocalypse will have to invent entirely new beasts, and beasts so terrible that the ancient animal symbols of Saint John will seem like cooing doves and cupids in comparison." -- Heinrich Heine "Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out hate; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction. The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Death and taxes and childbirth! There's never any convenient time for any of them." -- Margaret Mitchell, American novelist "In the tiny, almost invisible thirty two cell blastocyst--in that one gram or so of tissue--there is a physical potential and moral destiny unparalleled in our universe. Next to it, a gram of plutonium is a triviality: plutonium cannot compose a symphony, cannot cure cancer, cannot plan our course to the stars". -- Bernard Nathanson, M.D. and former abortionist "We divided the world into 'us' and 'them.' There is no 'them' left on our tiny planet." -- Marilyn Rea "The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything." -- Theodore Roosevelt "A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on." -- Carl Sandburg "More people are flattered into virtue than bullied out of vice." - R.S. Surtees "Fear less, hope more; eat less, chew more; whine less, breathe more; talk less, say more; love more, and all good things will be yours." -- Swedish proverb "Lead me from death to life, from lies to truth. Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Lead me from hatred to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill our heart, our world our universe... peace, peace, peace." -- Mother Teresa "Prayer for Peace" "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." -- Mark Twain REASON, SEASON, OR LIFETIME When someone is in your life for a REASON. . . It is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are! They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered. And now it is time to move on. Then people come into your life for a SEASON. Because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They bring you an experience of peace, or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season. LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons: things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant. Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. And dance like no one is watching. (Sing like there's nobody listening. Live like its heaven on earth.) (Allan Burch) "Few things can help an individual more than to place responsibility on him, and to let him know that you trust him." -- Booker T. Washington "Why is suicide referred to as 'taking your own life'? Because you take it from God and throw it to the winds." -- Gregg Wertenberger "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." -- Robin Williams, American comedian We create our own normality. -- Elijah Wood, September 12, 1997 And I truly think that one really good friend is so much better than 30 acquaintances. Really good friends will stay with you for a long time, and that's so much more important than just having acquaintances. -- Elijah Wood, September 12, 1997 |
